1985 was when the number of medical issues began to multiply as seen below. The two issues above were created by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hal Yocum. The one on the left were issued to all members of the Health and Safety Staff. The one on the right, in addition to having the "H&S" overstitched on the fleur-de-le, have two yellow caduceuses in the corners, and these were issued to medical officers.
This is the last jamboree for which Dr. Merrill Sharp created a personal medical staff patch. Dr. Sharp was the chief medical officer for several jamborees and had been on medical staff as far back as the 1957. His 1964 National Jamboree medical patch is thought to have been thrown away, and I am not certain whether he attended the 1977 National Jamboree, but he otherwise created a medical patch for every National Jamboree from 1957 through 1985 as well as the 1967 World Jamboree.
The above set of twelve patches were produced by Dr. Michael Diamond. I am not sure what the different border colors mean. The set on the left without words were for physicians.
Scouts who were active in 1985 will remember that there were a lot of issues with the diamond jubilee center and different wording around the outside. This issue was made by Dr. Marv Gershenfeld.
This button was made by Dr. Harvey Rudolph for staff members working subcamp 16.
This last issue isn't really a medical staff issue, but Howard Ang who manufactured patches in Taiwan made a lot of these personalized jacket patches. Accord to Dr. Yocum, this was made without his approval to try to get him to order medical patches from Ang.
This is the first jamboree for which there are pins issued. Pin collecting in general became very popular at the 1985 National Jamboree. Dr. Michael Diamond, who created the twelve patches above, created these pins as well.
